Mass cooperation starts with play

Dr G Pat Patterson

Playing together to solve a problem and adjusting when things aren’t quite working is exactly how kids play: for the love of movement, experimentation, and the wielding of possibility. Play is where adaptation, affection, and community converge, and that is precisely how power is built.

This regenerative style of mass-cooperation also has the added benefit of creating political permacultures where political abuse is unable to take root. But more than that, we shape the future by practicing it in the present. In the process, we build interconnected ecosystems made for adaptation and collaboration. There is simply no way out of the challenges we face without relearning how to play together.

We already have a plan

The Daisy Chain is a heuristic, which (by definition) is a creative device that helps people think through challenges and solve problems. Heuristics take many forms, but they often rely on an easily remembered metaphor or compelling visual. The Daisy Chain relies on the image of a flower as a heuristic to help people imagine how to organize into neighborhood hives.

Before we dive in, that The Daisy Chain reflects observable patterns of human behavior, which exist now and have existed throughout space and time, whenever a people’s backs are against the wall. The Daisy Chain is not a grand theory; it reflects back people’s best qualities under duress and reminds people, who may feel scared and helpless, that we already have a plan. We simply need to follow it.
